Brief History: The Quarter Horse breed was created in the U.S., the result of the mixture of the many breeds brought into America from other countries when it was first being settled. They were raced by colonists as early as the late 1600s, running through the main streets for a quarter of a mile. However, the Quarter Horse was not recognized as an official breed until 1940. There are now over 2 million and a half of them registered.

Uses: Quarter Horses are known for their speed at the quarter-mile, as well for making good cow horses. They are agile, sure-footed, and strong. They are used for racing, western, and English riding. They also can be great family horses.

Description: The Quarter Horse has a solid build with muscular legs, shoulders, and rump. They aren't tall horses, but they are the heaviest breed of horse for their height out of all other saddle horse breeds. They have small muzzles; short, wide heads; long, flexible necks; well-defined withers; powerful hindquarters; and sloping shoulders. The most common color for the Quarter Horse is chestnut, but they can also be all other solid colors. They usually are somewhere between 15 and 16 hands high.
